The City of Punta Gorda recently concluded its 2026 Harborside Hometown University session. For residents who want a closer look at how local government works, this free program offers an informative and engaging experience. As a recent participant, I can confidently say it is well worth attending.
Formerly known as Citizens Academy, Harborside Hometown University has helped residents learn about city government since 2011. More than 265 residents have completed the program to date. Open to Punta Gorda residents age 18 and older, the program is free to attend. Participants who attend at least eight of the 10 interactive sessions graduate with a deeper understanding of city operations and a stronger connection to the community.
Coordinated by the Public Works Department, the program begins each January and meets every other Tuesday over eight weeks. Throughout the session, city staff share an in-depth look at their various departments and explain how they work together to deliver services that support Punta Gorda residents every day.
